TranSystems’ Cleveland, Ohio office has an immediate opening for a Structural/Bridge Engineer. This position includes structural design, rehabilitation, and inspection of bridges and tunnels along with the preparation of load ratings, construction documents, specifications, and estimates. In addition, duties may include construction inspection services. Day to day assignments and technical guidance will be provided by current staff Project Managers. The ideal candidate will have experience in bridge design and inspection, and an interest in learning and working on diverse project assignments which may include highway bridges, freight and passenger rail structures, and miscellaneous structural assignments.

 

Basic Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor’s degree in civil and/or structural engineering with an emphasis in structures from an ABET-accredited university or college with 4+ years of engineering experience
  • Professional licensed engineer
  • Individuals should have experience in reading plans and shop drawings, and evaluating contractor compliance with construction plans and specifications.
  • Team oriented engineer with strong communication skills.
  • Experience with Microsoft Suite and Bentley MicroStation
  • Experience with structural engineering software
  • Able and willing to travel within the continental United States
  • Physically capable of performing field work including working at heights, carrying ladders and gear, working in adverse weather conditions, etc.
  • Valid Driver’s License

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • NHI certifications including: Safety Inspection of In-Service Bridges #130055 or #130056 with Bridge Inspection Refresher Training #130053 (if applicable) and Fracture Critical Inspection Techniques #130078
  • Rope access experience or an interest in learning rope access techniques (SPRAT, IRATA)
  • Extensive experience with Microsoft Excel including basic programming ability
  • The preferred candidate will have a structural engineering background, knowledge of Microstation, AutoCAD, and some experience with structural engineering design drawings, specifications and cost estimates.
  • Experience with bridge engineering or construction inspection experience in Ohio is a plus
  • Additional training/certification such as OSHA, CPR/First Aid, etc. is a plus

 

General Duties & Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

 

  1. Analyzes information and data to perform inspection/design tasks.
  2. Makes decisions independently on engineering problems and methods, and occasionally represents the organization in meetings to resolve important questions, and to plan and coordinate work.
  3. Receives instructions from Project Manager or Senior Project Engineers as to the general results expected.
  4. Receives technical guidance on unusual or complex problems and supervisory approval on proposed plans for projects.
  5. Responsible for accuracy of engineering design, reports, load ratings, and plans, quality presentation, thoroughness and follow-through, and efficient conformance to budgets, schedules, and company standards.
  6. Research design options and code requirements and document findings for Senior Project Engineer.
  7. Keeps Senior Project Manager informed of workload and any changes in project schedule or scope or additional services.
  8. Maintain professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops; reviewing professional publications; establishing personal networks; participating in professional societies.
  9. Assist or participate in preparation of business proposals.
  10. Usually performs as a staff advisor and consultant to technical specialty.
  11. Travel within the continental United States.

 

Supervisory Responsibilities – It is not planned to have staff report to this current position, however this position will need to be able to give direction, advice, and deadlines to the staff supporting them on projects they are involved with. It is also anticipated that this position will have interaction directly with the clients.

Education/Experience – A Civil or Structural Engineering Bachelor’s degree with 4-10 years of experience is required.

 

Computer Skills – MicroStation, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Office, and various structural engineering software systems depending on engineering discipline including but not limited to AASHTOWare BrR, and Bentley design products, LPile, STAAD, RISA

 

Certificates and Licenses – Licensed Professional Engineer required. Licensed Structural Engineer with bridge emphasis preferred but not required. Registered as a licensed Professional Engineer in Ohio preferred but not required.

The employee frequently is required to stand, walk, talk or hear, and drive a car/truck. The employee is occasionally required to reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include ability to adjust focus.
